TEST DRIVE MEME 001 (#2)

HAPPY HEARTS HOTEL

You wake up in a padded box. It rocks, gently, as though suspended in mid-air. You begin to stir, confusion or distress pushing you to try to sit up — and then the air begins to smell sweet, and you fall back asleep.

You wake up in a padded box. For a moment, you are beatifically calm. You don't know how you got here, or why, but that isn't really all that important. You don't need to know where you are. You're just... here. And here is a wonderful place to be.

But there is a niggling suspicion growing in the back of your mind. A suspicion that here is not somewhere you wanted to be. That it is not where you're supposed to be. You remember... chasing a white rabbit (or was it a person)? A mirror? Bright light, and green ivy crawling over your skin... Before you can worry too much, the box jolts, and then settles, and after a long moment the walls fall from around you to reveal —

A hotel lobby?

"Welcome to the Happy Hearts Hotel and Casino," says an attendant behind a desk. "We're so pleased you could join us for our grand opening gala. We have your room keys and Empathies here, please make an orderly line and we'll hand them out once we've confirmed identities. After that, feel free to explore the hotel! We highly recommend starting with the casino. Everyone's a winner here in Happy Hearts!"

Is this normal? It doesn't feel normal. And hey — you could swear you had shoes before!

I. THE CASINO FLOOR

As you pass through the entrance to the casino floor, an attendant passes you a small bag of chips. The casino is loud and bright and filled with games of every kind — you want to play poker? They've got a table for that. Sabacc? There's a table for that, too. Slots, pachinko, and bingo are just a few of the other games on offer. The attendant in the lobby wasn't lying, either — everyone who plays wins. Everyone, every time.

Servers wander the floor with trays of shotglasses full of multi-coloured liquids, offering them to every Oyster "Compliments of Her Royal Highness." If you're expecting alcohol, though, you'll be surprised — these drinks are teas made of the distilled emotions of every Oyster in the hotel. Each colour of tea corresponds to a different emotion, and as soon as you take a sip, you feel overcome with that emotion.
JOY — the distilled essence of happiness, this tea makes even the most rough and tumble of Oysters giddy with happiness — for a moment. The effect fades into a general sense of contentment and affability after a few seconds, and that itself fades away slowly over the course of twenty minutes.

ANGER — this tea, anger in liquid form, can make the most even-tempered of Oysters ready to absolutely blow a gasket. For twenty minutes, anyone who drinks this tea will find themselves much more easily annoyed, frustrated, and all around irritable and snappy.

SADNESS — distilled sadness is a potent tea, capable of turning a stoic, stalwart Oyster into a blubbering mess in moments. Events that may have previously only been a minor disappointment become the end of the world, every repressed unhappiness comes to the fore, and for twenty minutes, any Oyster who drinks a sadness tea can hardly keep themselves together.

II. MAKING WAVES

If gambling isn't to your interest, there are many other areas of the hotel to explore! For the moment, only The Pool Of Tears and the Pig & Pepper Buffet are available for Oysters to peruse, but the staff assure anyone who asks that the other facilities will be open by the next day. Unfortunately, that means no one can buy any swimsuits from This Elegant Thimble, but the staff aren't going to kick anyone out of the pool for jumping in in their clothes!

There are four main attractions to The Pool of Tears: the pool, the jacuzzi, the wave pool, and the lazy river. The water is always just the right temperature, clean and clear and refreshing. It feels as if the sun shines down from above you, warm and comforting. Scattered through the pool area are clusters of modern lounge chairs, just waiting for someone to come relax in them. The Pool is, in a word, serene.

But not for long. The waves generated by the wave pool begin to get choppier, and larger, until it becomes clear that the generator itself is malfunctioning — too late, however, to avoid the tsunami that crashes through the whole Pool and leaves it flooded. Thankfully, no water escapes into the rest of the hotel, and the hotel staff work quickly to rescue those trapped in the Pool and drain the flooding — but you better hope you can tread water until they get to you!

III. EAT ME, DRINK ME

The Pig & Pepper buffet serves lunch foods from across all different cultures, offering something for everyone, and some things you've never even heard of.

On offer with these lunchtime dishes are cookies and biscuits and scones of all kinds, held on tiered trays with signs that proclaim Eat Me! in delightfully whimsical calligraphy. Nearby, hotel staff man a small booth for doling out cups of fruit waters from large pitchers, which have Drink Me! painted playfully on their sides.

It takes a while to feel the effects — perhaps you've even left the Pig & Pepper by the time it happens — but those who eat the cookies and scones inevitably end up growing in size, whether a few inches or feet, and those who drank the fruity water similarly shrink. Eat enough and you might strain the ceiling; drink enough and you'll be the size of a thimble! It's not permanent — if no one else can help you figure out how to get back to normal, the staff certainly will — but it's definitely inconvenient!

IV. WELCOME HOME

Maybe you just want to be alone — well, that's what you have your room key for! Oysters room on the second and third floors of the hotel, one to a room. You were assured your room would be exactly what you'd always wished for — and for some, that's right! It's exactly as you would have decorated it yourself. But for others, their rooms are totally wrong. A grizzled cowboy can't have a pink room! Hotel staff are firm, though: every room is exactly as its owner wants it to be. Search your feelings, Oyster. You know it to be true.

On each bed are the Oysters' personal effects, minus weapons, as well as a towel folded in the shape of a heart, and a single foil-wrapped chocolate. If eaten, the chocolate is delicious, and incites a feeling of tender warmth in Oysters — not lust, but a desire for closeness. Why spend time in your room, when you could go find a new friend in the casino?

Welcome to the (second!) first TDM of Happy Hearts, a new panfandom roleplaying game here on DW! If you have any questions, please direct them to the first comment on this page. Happy playing, Oysters!

Hello mods! Just one question here - are characters allowed to set up their own games, or will the staff object to any games not being held by them? This definitely will not be used for anything nefarious what-so-ever, like cheating people out of their chips, no way.

[ It's instinctual at this point. Aziraphale being even mildly in distress seemed to summon Crowley to his side in a heartbeat and the demon practically dives to catch him - even if the fall is half of what it would normally be. He helps right the angel, trying not to seem too much like he's fussing. ]

Bless it, Aziraphale, the things you get yourself into. How'd this happen anyway?

[a: casino floor (+ joy)]

[Mikumo is not at all used to having the free time and freedom in general to try out new things, and while she's more interested in it than she might have once been, she still needs a bit of a nudge to try out the gambling games. Upbeat as the energy is, and as confident as she generally is with handling other people, it's not something that exactly falls into her usual pursuits.

Eventually, though, she makes the mistake of taking a drink, and some might see the serene, put-together-looking woman dissolve into laughter for a moment after drinking the pink beverage before recovering herself. Still, there's a noticeable new beam to her expression, and now she doesn't hesitate to flag down anyone who might be passing and looks like they know what they're doing, or is already at a table.]

Excuse me, do you mind if I watch you play? Or perhaps join in later. I've never had the chance to play any of these games before now.

[She admits that readily enough, apparently not considering anything might be weird about that statement when she looks about twenty.]

--

[b: eat me]

[Eating in front of other people is still something of a point of contention for Mikumo, but she does need food and she figures a restaurant is probably one of the better places to get used to eating in public. While she typically holds to a strict diet, she's curious about some of the dessert foods which were usually locked out of it, so she ends up taking a cookie and a scone. And then maybe just one or two more before her self-control kicks in and she decides to leave.

She's only about two corridors away before the effects make themselves known, though, and she finds herself blocking most of the corridor off, suddenly having grown enough to be pushing up against the ceiling even sitting on her knees.]

...My my, now I know what it feels like for the Zentradi. [She sounds somewhat amused with the situation, and she tries to glance back over her shoulder if she hears anyone else enter the corridor.] Is there another path you can take? I might be a moment.

[c: network, un: venus]

So, it seems I have a considerable group of new people to meet and new places to hear about.

My name is Mikumo Guynemer, and I lead the tactical sound unit Walküre. I've been to many planets before now for concerts and such things, but I have to say this is a new experience. If possible, I'd like to hear a little about the worlds the others here come from. I may be familiar with some of them, but I'd be most curious about the ones I've never visited myself.

I'll start: I'm usually stationed on Ragna, which is a charming little planet with much more water than land. The local Ragnans are semi-aquatic and do most of their trade and living around the waterfronts, though recently there's been more humans settling on the planet alongside them.

He noticed the other immediately. It was obvious there was something he expected to happen when he snapped those fingers. Of course, Mukuro had also attempted to use his power only to find it unavailable to him so he fully understood the frustrations.

"It appears they thought it would be fun to strip us of our skills."

He leaned against a nearby machine, watching with boredom as people won over and over again.

Hello! So 2 questions:

1. Athena was born with the ability to hear emotions. Would this also be nerfed or still allowed?

2. Her necklace (Widget) is able to assist her in stuff like checking emails, going over evidence for court cases, or pulling up the Mood Matrix to help with testimonies that are messy. It also has a habit of saying what she's thinking at times. Would this still work?

[After his encounter with the colored tea, Mukuro decided to avoid all manners of food and drink for the time being. So when he sees a very tiny man waving at him, he can only assume that he also made a similar mistake. Reaching down, he holds out his hand so that the other can climb on if he so chose.]

I don't think complaining will do you much good. This place seems to enjoy its practical jokes.

[ like mikumo, ann is also curious about the dessert foods -- though most of it is because she's a complete junkie for sweets, and the scones in particular are hard to resist. she'll admit that the "eat me!" signs are weird, because of course she's going to eat these, but she ignores it and hastily eats the scone.

it's good. really good. she helps herself to a few more.

a few minutes later, from the opposite end of the corridor, mikumo will see ann start to grow significantly.
]

What the-?!

[ she lets out a horrified noise as she grows until she, too, has her head nearly touching the ceiling.

then, she looks up to see another girl in the same predicament as her. oh no. oh no.
]

Oooh, I knew there was something weird about those signs! [ she looks over at mikumo. ] Hey, did you eat those desserts, too?

[This is quite a predicament they've found themselves in. After some rearranging, Mikumo chooses to sit herself cross-legged on the floor rather than kneeling, though it does mean her knees are up against each wall and she has to hunch her back a bit. Her purple hair pools around her, looking like it might threaten to consume anyone who comes too near with its sheer mass now.]

I did. I was starting to wonder if there was a reason I was on such a restricted diet back home other than the obvious one. [Idols always tend to have some degree of limitation on their diet, and her being an artificial human didn't help either.] But if it's happened to someone else, I suppose at least I can stop worrying that I have some kind of macronising dessert allergy.

[Or, more accurately, worrying that someone engineered a radical reaction to foods too far outside her diet into her without her knowing. Also, she could've just said gigantifying, but macronising is a more familiar term in her world considering they have an actual alien species who needs to shrink to interact with humans and enlarge again afterwards.]

I do. Humans had to leave Earth some years ago to find new places to settle, and they split themselves between a lot of different ships to increase their chances of finding a new home. So by now, there's human settlements scattered across the galaxy, and while Earth is less populated, there are still a few new cities there.

Is space travel not possible in your world?

[personal profile] stargazed 2020-04-23 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
I see. I suppose I'm too used to it to not find that strange, but the quick development of space travel in my time wasn't exactly by choice.

A war between two alien races that had been going on for thousands of years ended up catching Earth in its crossfire. Most of the planet's surface was destroyed, and only a small fraction of the population survived by escaping on a spaceship. The original survivors returned after the war ended, but to lessen the risk of being wiped out by something else, they began sending ships to find other inhabitable planets.

stargazed: (the more i wish to know)

[personal profile] stargazed 2020-04-23 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
Very far away, outside of that galaxy. It's part of a system called the Brisingr Globular Cluster. I was born after settlement on Ragna, so I'm afraid I couldn't tell you specifics about how far it is from Earth, but it's far enough that I've never travelled to Earth myself even with ships that can use fold gates.

[Even with warp-like technology, some distances are difficult to cross.]

[personal profile] stargazed 2020-04-23 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, that's a curveball her own world hasn't thrown her yet.]

Are you saying you travel dimensions instead of planets, then? That's not something we had the chance to focus on as much where I come from.

[Though now that she thinks about it, if there are people here from versions of Earth that weren't disturbed like the one in her universe (dimension?) was, that probably speaks for itself.]

Well, it doesn't exactly seem like something someone would do for tourism or trade.

[Whereas both of those are pretty popular options with the space travel in her universe.]

It's still interesting that your version of Earth found a way to do that before long-distance space travel, though. Different pressures, I suppose.

[Considering long-distance space travel happened in hers because a: someone crashed an advanced spaceship on Earth and b: humans really needed to get off the planet quickly not long after that.]
